On the subject of graphics cards for laptops, is there a low-profile card
from NVidia that fits an HP laptop and is CUDA-capable?

In the spirit of supporting this listserve alive (almost smells like a
Manifold "underground" is developing on this listserve - many widely
successful products of this nature have them!), I'll post here.
Due to an employment change, the need for having my desktop PC capabilities
mobile w/all of its resources became paramount. Therefore, I needed a new
laptop to replace my aged one, but have performance on par with a well
equipped desktop for analysis and engineering related work. The thread Mr.
Driscoll points out has some very good things I took a several day crash
course in specing my new laptop.
I ended up picking up a HP DV6575, as it's specs appeared to be at the cusp
of when one begins to shell out a lot more money for marginal performance
increases. It is marketed to the home and entertainment market, which means
serious gaming. That PC will never see a game installed on it. The system
requirements for serious PC gaming is on par with what is required to
serious analytical and engineering work. The only real compromise HP made
on this model was putting in a slower than optimal hard drive in it.
While only just a month old, this laptop runs like a champ with some very
demanding applications. Plus, it is quickly more miles than most people
travel in the course of their employment.
Regardless of what laptop you buy, since you are posting here, it is
suggested that you be uncompromising about making sure your next laptop
have a separate graphics card in it. Many laptops do not. By nature GIS is
a graphics heavy application. Off loading those demands onto a separate
graphics card greatly helps performance.
