Yes, the proj/units is most likely the problem.  The units used by the intrinsic fields in the table are based on the
units of the projection.  If your informaiton is in lat/lon, then your area units are in degrees.  If you project your
data to a projection that uses the units you want (ie. UTM uses meters), then things will probably work the way you
want.
