[Manifold-l] MapInfo tab import

Has anyone had difficulty importing non-mapped MapInfo files?
 
I import a MapInfo file (*.bin, *.tab, .*tab, *.map) without problem.  But
if it's an unmapped table (no *.map), the File/Import/Drawing method fails.
It reads the columns it just fails at the end of the import process.
 
Am I missing something really obvious?  On Manifold's part is there an
assumption that a *.map object always exists with a *.tab file?
