[Manifold-l] [Spam] SHP FILES - MANIFOLD TO MAPINFO 8.5

MapInfo Professional 7.5+ can use SHP files like it uses rasters such as
GeoTiffs or ECW - except of course the SHP contains vector data.
What happens is that the TAB file contains a reference to the SHP (and its
DBF attributes file), and the MI engine handles the rendering of the vector
data.

Now, I have an ancient version of MI (v6.5) and I won't upgrade in the near
future, so I may be wrong in this: I don't believe that the SHP files can
actually be edited by MapInfo. In order to do so, what you would need to do
with MapInfo v8.5 is to **import** them, using the Universal Translator
tool, so that they're in native MapInfo format (DAT). Then, you have a set
of MI files that can be edited as required by the client.

May I ask why you didn't export the data in either native MapInfo format
(what manifold would show as TAB), or in the MIF/MID exchange format? SHP is
foreign to both Manifold and to MapInfo (and should be a banned format in my
opinion!!).

Subject: [Manifold-l] [Spam] SHP FILES - MANIFOLD TO MAPINFO 8.5

I've export shp files from 7.0 and emailed to client. When MapInfo 8.5
(latest version)opens them they cannot be edited. I have visited the
recipient on site with my laptop and copied files to their PC from memory
stick. Still no edit. Right click on the layer in MapInfo and the edit box
is greyed out. The files are not read only when windows reads them and I
don't have passwords to protect the data etc.
I've repeated this with several files to no avail. I exported some as .mif
and they worked fine in MapInfo. Only the shp files are uneditable.
(in case of wonder - Lines with lots data don't seam to export from Manifold
and into MapInfo as .mifs - they don't open at all in 8.5 at this end)
Can anyone offer help here?
Regards Richard
