[ another attempt ]
Besides the release this week of Adobe Acrobat 8 (Professional, Standard,
and a stripped-down version called Elements), the free Acrobat Reader v8 is
available from the usual location (20Mb).
I had never bothered with the 3D aspects of Acrobat Reader before, but this

sample file is good to play with in Reader v7 (7.0.8) - use your mouse to
zoom in an out on the gas turbine engine. It's super-quick.
It uses the U3D ECMA standard (Universal 3D) which is described at the ECMA
site (look for ECMA-363), and is a Sourceforge project
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/u3d/). The 3D Industry Forum (3DIF)
cooperated with ECMA to develop the standard - see http://www.3dif.org
<http://www.3dif.org/>
There are several CAD software products that can create the 3D PDF files.
Initiators of U3D seem to have been Intel Corporation, Adobe, and Bentley
Systems.
