You don't.  I never have to.

It doesn't.  If you've saved a project as a .map file there are zero issues
opening it again.  

Issues can and do arise when you link things into a project as opposed to
importing them.  But that's the price you pay for linking as all sorts of
things, such as a data source no longer being available, change in path,
etc., can bedevil you.

[A caveat: this does, of course assume that nothing external, such as
Windows permissions is goofing you up.  It should go with out saying that
saving a .map project under one user login and then attempting to open it
with a different user login that does not have sufficient permissions will,
as designed, have problems.  But then this is a feature of Windows that for
darn good reasons is supposed to work exactly that way.  :-) ]
