[Geomedia-l] Geomedia to Google Earth

Hello List,
I'm placing an unsupported GeoMedia command that exports to KML on our
ftp site. It is very intuitive: It displays a list of features from the
legend to export to KML:
1.) Place a check by the features you want to export, 2.) name the
output KML file, 3.) press the Next button, 4.) select an attribute to
display (more on this in a minute), and 5.) press Finish. The KML looks
great in Google Earth. (Double click on the KML file to bring it up
Google Earth.)
Here are my comments: 1.) The command doesn't work with compound
features. 2.) Don't set a line weight for your features. For some
reason, line weights seem to make the color of the features go to white
in Google Earth (as opposed to the color set in the Legend like it
normally will.) I just use the default weight when an element is first
placed on the legend. 3.) Remember that the angle of the images in
Google Earth is skewed. So if you have GPS readings for a building
footprint, and you bring the building footprint into Google Earth, it
won't necessarily line up with the image like you expect. If you look
at something like curb lines, however, they will line up as you would
expect because they are closer to the ground.
Finally, I mentioned you need to select an attribute for each feature
before pressing the Finish button. This is required but can be a
nuisance - basically, you'll get a bunch of tooltips in Google Earth
with the attributes from the features. If you just want the graphics,
create a non-populated field for your features and use that. For
example, I added a field called "BLANK" defined as Small Integer.

Enjoy!

Hi Kris/Dave,
I had requested this as far back as December 2005 i.e just after 6.0 was
released (Postgres 8.0, PostGIS 1.0 just released?). But I think I was
told that this needs to be substantiated by a whole lot of customers for
the GM product development team to justify the time + effort.
Since I am currently enjoying access to Geomedia through a free LSU
academic license (Farrell Jones @LSU is my boss), I figure it would be
better if paying customers ask for this feature. Can you or other paying
customers support this CR by filing it with your local reps?
Postgresql has a Point in time recovery (PITR) which would do exactly
what Oracle Flashback does. PITR is mature, and with the advent of 8.2
of Postgres it is fully as good as Oracle in many things. My view is
that PostGIS is also stable since 1.2, not too many changes is good.
Geomedia Transaction Manager would need to be modified such that it
makes use of Postgresql's MVCC locking, and does a Oracle like
optimistic concurrent locking, i.e it will have to implement a small
functionality of Oracle Workspace Manager.
Only thing Postgres lacks is to highlight exactly what changes you need
to make a DML statement go faster i.e automatic query optimization
suggestions. Oracle does it (semi)automatically but Postgres forces you
to look at its 'Explain plan', which is quite powerful but somewhat
overwhelming to a newbie.
Postgres has arrived, even on Windows!
Thanks in advance
