A reason GeoMedia only supports a subset of SVG elements?

Great lead Kris. It's important to note that the SVG files that GM
supports are not the SVG structure that is exported from AI (or at least
it wasn't when I last tested).
You should theoretically also be able to import the image into the layout
window and vectorize it in the window. Then you can covert the layout
window to a symbol. Once it's a symbol, you should be able to convert it
to SVG. It's a lot of work, but MAY be more straightforward then trying to
figure out the difference between the file produced by Inkscape and the GM
structure.

Download Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/) opensource, SVG based drawing
tool). It has an excellent bitmap trace function with many options and is
really stable and fast.
You'll need to do some manual editing of the SVG file since GeoMedia
requires some specific structure.
In case someone is handy with Python, it should be possible to write a
small plugin that prepares the SVG for GeoMedia.
