Takeaways from the Esri UC 2010
Readers offered thoughts on Esri's "new name" and an overdue API.
"The most obvious reason for the flex name is not mentioned. Saying
Esri (two syllables) has always been easier and more natural than
saying E S R I (four syllables). ..."
- John Williams, Baron Services
"... Why didn't *you* poke ESRI (and hard) on that topic, rather than talking to someone from another company? ..."
- Sam, independent consultant
Ed. note: We followed up with Esri and received the following response from John Baleja, Esri Product Management:
Our plan is to develop a
specification and C++ library to allow non-ArcObjects access to the
File Geodatabase for non-ESRI users. This long delayed project has been
impacted by the need to wait for the geodatabase changes that are in
10.0 (simplified table structure and the move from using a binary type
to XML). The File Geodatabase API is an off-cycle project and work is
underway now. There should be a limited beta in late Fall 2010, but we
will have more definitive information in September.
Following Esri UC from a Distance via Social Media
A reader had several questions.
"... Attending the UC strictly to absorb technical details is
ultimately a selfish act. I'd recommend getting out and talking with
people either over a beer or an iced tea. ..."
Atanas Entchev, the interviewee, responded:
"... I am no stranger to the social aspect of social media (Google me),
but in this case I wanted (and got) just the raw info. Call me selfish."
