Sourcemap
is a website that shows you where all the "ingredients" for products
come from and where manufacturing takes place. Below is the map for an
IKEA Sultan Alsarp bed. It's assembled in China with pieces and parts
from as far away as Africa and Germany. According to the site:
"Sourcemap is a collective tool for transparency and sustainability"
that helps you make purchase decisions based on a product's carbon
footprint. Acid rain is caused by the production of the particle
board and plywood in the IKEA bed, for example, while the cotton fabric
has chemical intensive cultivation to worry about.
