First Open Source GIS UK Conference WebcastsFirst Open Source GIS UK Conference Webcasts

In June of this year Nottingham University hosted the First Open Source GIS UK Conference. The aims of the event included hearing presentations from government, academic, industry and policy makers on open source geospatial technologies, providing a platform to network and develop ideas for future collaborative work in open source GIS, developing an understanding of current developments in open source GIS and enabling a focus for open source GIS research. One hundred and fifty delegates represented 17 countries. Co-chair Dr. Suchith Anand reports that webcasts of the program are available for free online and invites the community that could not attend to view them.

Witness Geospatial trends shaping today's IT industry: mobile platforms, crowd sourcing, clouds, standards, open source and Spatial Data Infrastructures, at a significant international conference.

Location-based services are maturing and the focus for many is monetization. Rotterdam-based AND Mapping's CEO Maarten Oldenhof will provide his perspective on the geospatial market and Examiner.com's CFO Marc Kiven will look at how the media landscape is changing in a world of iPhones and new delivery platforms. Don't miss the insights these forward looking experts will offer at LI 2009.

Research Trends in Geographic Information Science
In June/July 2008 the Institute for Geoinformation and Cartography at the Vienna University of Technology organized a scientific colloquium in this city, where 15 well-known scientists presented their ideas on research for the upcoming decade. This book contains papers prepared by the participants as well as by other researchers. The 18 papers in this book reflect the opinion of a core group of geoinformation scientists about future research topics. Dealing with these topics poses multiple research questions for the coming years. Springer, 2009.

Weaving Services and People on the World Wide Web
Ever since its inception, the Web has changed the landscape of human experiences on how we interact with one another and data through service infrastructures via various computing devices. This interweaving environment is now becoming ever more embedded into devices and systems that integrate seamlessly on how we live, both in our working or leisure time. For this volume, King and Baeza-Yates selected some pioneering and cutting-edge research work that is pointing to the future of the Web. Based on the Workshop Track of the 17th International World Wide Web Conference (WWW2008) in Beijing, they selected the top contributions and asked the authors to resubmit their work with a minimum of one third of additional material from their original workshop manuscripts to be considered for this volume. After a second-round of reviews and selection, 16 contributions were finally accepted. From Springer, 2009.

The Implementation and Effectiveness of GIS in Secondary Education: Geographic Information Systems in Education
Some educators consider GIS to be one of the most promising means for implementing educational reform. However, GIS technology has been adopted by only 1% of American high schools. This research describes the geographic and curricular extent to which GIS technology and methods are being implemented in secondary education in the USA, explains why and how GIS is being implemented, and assesses the effects of GIS-based lessons on teaching and learning. A national survey of 1,520 high schools provided primary data to explain the extent of the implementation. A set of experiments and case studies provided primary data for assessing the effects of GIS. From VDM Verlag, 2009.

This instructional tutorial covers the following: the Oracle components used in mapping solutions; out-of-the-box maps for the Oracle environment from NAVTEQ; how to integrate demographic and business data stored in Oracle with maps; how maps add business value to your Oracle applications; and how JSP and SQL APIs from Oracle make creating powerful Web mapping applications easy.

Microsoft and IDV Solutions at Work for the Enterprise (registration required)
Directions Media Webinar Series - Sponsored by Microsoft
The Virtual Earth platform - now Bing Maps for Enterprise - is a critical component of the Microsoft geospatial story, enabling public sector agencies to serve up data in a manner that allows users to better visualize, understand and ultimately to act on them in a more timely fashion, while simultaneously cutting costs and delivering clear value to their constituencies. Visual Fusion from IDV Solutions combines with Bing Maps, SharePoint and other Microsoft technologies to create a visual mashup platform, empowering organizations to unite data from otherwise incompatible sources - enterprise data stores, Web feeds, spreadsheets and more - into rapidly-built, interactive and collaborative applications that provide a single view of the data.
