Commercial GPS dataCommercial GPS Data Typically Two Years Old: A Reason to Use Crowdsourced Data?

There are always complaints about satellite navigation devices misdirecting drivers. Sometimes it's the algorithms and sometimes it's the data. Ziff Davis Australia got hold off Google's Ed Parsons who noted that the data on the devices, even new ones, may be two years old. Might that be the reason to opt into crowdsourced data? And, how often do data providers suggest you upgrade?

The Apps for America 2 contest from Sunlight Labs is a Sunlight Foundation project focused on allowing people to access and scrutinize government data. Developers were given the opportunity to submit applications using open source development tools and government data. Now you get to vote for one of three finalists (free registration required). Voting is open through Monday. The three finalists include:

This We Know, which allows you to access data about any community, such as number of unemployed and ethnicity

govpulse, which allows you to access to Federal Register, an official federal government publication listing all requests for proposals

DataMasher, a "toy box" application that lets you perform any kind of math (e.g. Median Monthly Mortgage Costs divided by Median Household Income) on government data
