Usability and the GeoWeb Part 3: Protect Your Users From Themselves
In
his third article on user interfaces and the GeoWeb Brian Noyle
addresses "protecting users from themselves." The basic idea is to
design an interface so that users don't get into trouble and have a
"bad experience." The goal is never to point to "less experienced" or
"brain dead" users, but rather to advocate for and create really
effective interfaces.

Advances in Spatial and Temporal Databases: 11th International Symposium, SSTD 2009
This
volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th International
Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases, SSTD 2009, held in
Aalborg, Denmark, in July 2009. The 20 revised full papers presented
together with three keynotes, seven short papers, and 10 demonstration
papers, were thoroughly reviewed and selected from a total of 62
research submissions and 11 demonstration submissions. The papers are
organized in topical sections on spatial and flow networks, integrity
and security, uncertain data and new technologies, indexing and
monitoring moving objects, advanced queries, as well as on models and
languages. From Springer, 2009.
Research Trends in Geographic Information Science
In
June/July 2008 the Institute for Geoinformation and Cartography at the
Vienna University of Technology organized a scientific colloquium in
this city, where 15 well-known scientists presented their ideas on
research for the upcoming decade. This book contains papers prepared by
the participants as well as by other researchers. The 18papers in this
book reflect the opinion of a core group of geoinformation scientists
about future research topics. Dealing with these topics poses multiple
research questions for the coming years. Springer, 2009.
Online Query Processing in Geographic Information Systems: Statistical and Probabilistic Approaches
Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) have been widely used in many applications
for exploring large georeferenced datasets. With the recent advances in
Internet technologies, a large volume of GIS data is available on the
Web. As a result, an increasing number of emerging applications began
to provide tools for accessing these data. However, exploring these
large data sets through spatial queries can be very time and resource
intensive. The need for interactive spatial queries has arisen in many
GIS applications for efficient decision-support. Another issue related
to online query processing in GIS is the limited access to Web data by
certain types of queries due to restrictive Web interfaces. This
problem hinders online data retrieval, which necessitates methods that
utilize certain query types to provide solutions to non-supported
queries. This book studies technical, practical and theoretical issues
in designing and implementing online query processing in GIS and
provides techniques for interactive spatial joins and efficient Web
data retrieval. This work should be useful to professionals in spatial
databases and GIS. From VDM Verlag, 2009.

Directions Media Webinar Series - Sponsored by NAVTEQ NAVTEQ
and Oracle present this webinar to help attendees discover the
software tools and skill set needed to location-enable enterprise
Oracle deployments using NAVTEQ data. This instructional tutorial
covers the following: the Oracle components used in mapping solutions;
out-of-the-box maps for the Oracle environment from NAVTEQ; how to
integrate demographic and business data stored in Oracle with maps; how
maps add business value to your Oracle applications; and how JSP and
SQL APIs from Oracle make creating powerful Web mapping applications
easy.
Microsoft and IDV Solutions at Work for the Enterprise (registration required)
Directions Media Webinar Series -
Sponsored by Microsoft The
Virtual Earth platform - now Bing Maps for Enterprise - is a critical
component of the Microsoft geospatial story, enabling public sector
agencies to serve up data in a manner that allows users to better
visualize, understand and ultimately to act on them in a more timely
fashion, while simultaneously cutting costs and delivering clear value
to their constituencies. Visual Fusion from IDV Solutions combines with
Bing Maps, SharePoint and other Microsoft technologies to create a
visual mashup platform, empowering organizations to unite data from
otherwise incompatible sources - enterprise data stores, Web feeds,
spreadsheets and more - into rapidly-built, interactive and
collaborative applications that provide a single view of the data.
Business Case: Meeting Community Needs by Leveraging Enterprise GIS
Solutions (registration required) Directions Media Webinar Series -
Sponsored by NAVTEQ Learn how multiple departments in cities and
counties are providing more robust services with enterprise GIS - while
achieving a reduction in expenditures. NAVTEQ map data powers the ESRI solutions
that enhance infrastructure supervision, provide greater performance management
and generate efficiencies in work processes, including U. S. Census 2010
preparations. The city of Alpharetta, GA has enhanced its workflows by
integrating GIS software and NAVTEQ data to support its overall business
processes. Learn how municipalities can take advantage of existing training,
software and data to implement enterprise solutions.
