This
issue of the JLS Newsletter features some highlights from
the industry and a sampling of some of the many online location-based
services that are popping up all over the Web (Consumer Services,
Enterprise Services and Government Services). The content and processing
variety is quite impressive. To gain insight into LBS futures, it's
important to stay abreast of developments in the broad Web services
arena. Many Web services are definite candidates for the mobile
information device. We feature a few of these location-based Web
services in this issue.
Also,
get an update on J2ME/MIDP and check out the insightful article
by Jon Spinney of ESRI (below) that discusses how the new OpenLS
platform is contributing to that "killer environment"
for which LBS developers have been waiting.
Finally,
we are pleased to welcome ObjectFX
as a JLS advertiser. Here's a company that offered LBS capabilities
before it was referred to as LBS.

the JLS site regularly

frame. The site also integrates other location-based information
for the safety of the public. Uses ESRI technology. |
| Track,
monitor, and change the status of moving vehicles. This ObjectFX
demo features a very thin Java applet that allows you to
track and interact with two vehicle "accounts", each operating
via recorded historical tracking data that resides in a relational
database. This tracking data was acquired from real time GPS
positional feeds. One thing you will notice as you run the demo
is the level of interaction you have over the map. This is because
applets give you the feeling of working on a full-featured desktop
application as opposed to a less interactive HTML-only display. |

Roadwatch Mobile's real-time traffic . The detailed mapping
utilizes ArcIMS and data is served by ArcSDE. |
